Asus Eee PC 1101HGO at Computex
by Keifu on Jun.04, 2009, under General

Our compatriots at Engadget Chinese have been doing all the leg work at Computex for us this week, and here’s another beauty they caught sight of: the ASUS Eee PC 1101HGO. Yes, this is something we have not previously spied… or have we? This newest addition to the Seashell line is extremely similar to the 1101HA we’ve caught wind of, but this one’s got 3G built in. The 11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768 resolution LCD-boasting PC houses an Intel Atom Z-series CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, three USB 2.0 sockets, a multicard reader, and a six-cell battery. We don’t have any information about pricing or availability as of yet, but we’ll let you know when we do.
I have tried netbooks with the Z series Atom processors and I am less than impressed. The 1101, with its 11.6 inch screen and built in HSDPA / 3G module, would have been a stellar netbook if not for the underpowered z processor. Let’s hope Asus does the right thing and roll out a newer version with the N series processors.

Asus Eee PC 1000HV now with Atom N280
by Keifu on May.22, 2009, under General

Another day, another entrant in the mile-long list of Eee PC netbooks. This one, however, is a curious add. You see, the Eee PC 1000HV originally came to light way back in July of 2008, when no fewer than 23 Eee model names were casually leaked out. Since that day, we’ve heard not a peep from the machine… until now, obviously. In a few locations overseas, the 1000HV has emerged for order, packing a 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 display, a 1.66GHz Atom N280 CPU, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, VGA output, the standard assortment of ports and a mildly attractive AMD HD 3450 graphics set — the same one that ASUS recently shoved in its HD-minded Eee Box 206. We can’t help but applaud the choice to slip in a real (or quasi-real, anyway) GPU here, but until this pup heads stateside, we’re still figuring this is all just a figment of our imagination.

Asus Eee PC Seashell is Official
by Keifu on May.05, 2009, under General

Asus has just announced the Eee PC Seashell - a netbook that comes in an opalescent glossy exterior, manufactured through the use of In-Mold Roller technology. In fact, the surface will simulate the effects of light sprinkling of fine sand on the exterior of a seashell. Doesn’t sound too much like a businessperson’s netbook, eh? Well, opening it is somewhat akin to ptying open an oyster, but you won’t find any pearls inside apart from the following :-
- 10" LED-backlit WSVGA glare-type display
- Ergonomically designed keyboard
- 160GB 2.5" SATA II hard drive
- 10GB online Eee Storage
- Wi-Fi-n connectivity
- Multitouch trackpad
There is no word on how much the Eee PC Seashell will cost though, but it shouldn’t amount to more than an expensive necklace of pearls.

Exhaustive Netbook Battery Comparison
by Keifu on Apr.10, 2009, under Hardware Review
It’s hardly the first netbook battery comparison to appear in the Thunderdome that is the internet, but this latest thirteen-strong round-up from Australia’s NetbookReview is one of the more comprehensive to emerge as of late, with it only slightly compromised by a few netbooks that aren’t available in the site’s home country. Not surprisingly, the netbooks equipped with six-cell batteries came out well ahead of their less well off counterparts, with the MSI Wind U115 Hybrid leading the way with an impressive time of 6:56. That was obviously aided in no small part by the netbook’s dual SSD / hard drive setup, and by a less commonly used 5100mAh six-cell battery, as opposed to the 6600mAh version used in the second and third place Eee PCs (which each clocked in around the four-hour mark). Bringing up the rear were the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 and Dell Mini 12, neither of which were able to eek out even two hours of use. As you might expect, however, all of the tests involved a worst-case scenario, so you can expect to get a good deal more juice from all of ‘em if you’re not spending every waking hour watching WMV files.

ASUS Eee PC T91 tablet netbook coming soon
by Keifu on Apr.05, 2009, under General
When a company filed their product documents with the FCC, you know it is on its way to the US market, and hopefully that would mean local availability soon.
No product photos so far but the netbook tablet is predicted to spot a 8.9”, 1024 x 600 touchscreen which can be folded down in the traditional convertible tablet style.
I have been trying out Windows 7 on my X61 tablet Thinkpad and am loving the new tablet features. Handwriting recognition is generally better than that in Vista with many new usability improvements. As soon as I get myself a tablet netbook, I will be sure to install and run Win 7, and give you guys a quick review.
Now all we need is a multi-touch tablet netbook! Fingers crossed…

Netbook with Optical Drive Arriving from Asus
by Keifu on Mar.28, 2009, under CES, General
“Sometimes we see devices at the CES that never get launched. Luckily, this isn’t one of those times. That ASUS Eee PC with the integrated optical drive we eye-spied in January is about to arrive in mid-April, says DigiTimes. It’s the same 1004DN we glimpsed during our ASUS booth tour and that integrated optical drive looks mighty slim.”
So now, the question is; do you really need an optical drive in a netbook? For the longest time, my main workhorse is the Lenovo X60 Thinkpad. No optical drive there and I have never missed it. Everything is either online or easily transported on a USB drive nowadays that you can hardly see a CD or DVD media at work or at home. And then you need to ask yourself why you are using a netbook in the first place. I am sure the main reasons are portability, weight, battery life above the rest. So having an optical drive on a netbook sounds like an innovation initially but it is questionable if it is really needed.

ASUS Unveils Skinny 1008HA “Shell” Netbook
by Keifu on Mar.07, 2009, under Video
Last week, word started to leak that ASUS was planning an Eee PC Shell netbook. Sure enough, they’ve just unveiled it at CeBIT and it sports the 1008HA moniker. Like others in the Eee PC 1000-line, this device offers a 10-inch display. What makes it different is the slim figure, yet it sure looks similar to MSI’s X-Slim devices to me. jkk was at the introduction and provides the video first-look above. It sounds like the “shell” name comes from “seashell,” since the device has a pearlescent look to it. Maybe this means we’ll see a small clam-shell mobile device in this line, too? ![]()
SlashGear offers some of specs, although ASUS seems to have left some key info out at the moment. What is known: 1.3MP camera, 802.11b/g/n, optional 3.75G WWAN and/or WiMAX, 92 percent scaled keyboard, one-inch “slim,” and 1.1 kilograms in weight (about 2.4 pounds)
