Unboxing of Nokia Netbook
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized
Might as well add your own soundtrack, because chances are, you won’t be able to understand what the narrator with a tattoo on his left hand is saying. Not that you really need, as you can probably get the gist of this Nokia Booklet 3G unboxing. We’ve got blue packaging, a power brick, a "Hello, Hei" greeting just under the portable itself, and a fairly sleek portable to boot.
The nokia Netbook 3G, as the name suggests, comes with a 3G module that will allow you to insert your 3G SIM card and thus do away with those unsightly dongle and USB adapter. Also of note is the OS that it will be shipped with. The Nokia Netbook will come with Windows 7 installed. With the improved power management in Windows 7, the Nokia Netbook’s battery life is stated at an impressive 12 hours.

Windows 7 Spotted on eCafe brand of netbook
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

The eCAFÉ EC-1000W is destined to ship at the tail end of October (you know, just after Win7 hits the streets), and while the 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 1GB RAM module and 250GB hard drive are totally predictable, we get the feeling it’ll just feel nicer thanks to the revitalized OS. Other specs include a 10.1-inch display (1,024 x 600), 50GB of online storage, a chiclet-style keyboard, 802.11n WiFi, a 6-cell battery, integrated webcam / microphone, three USB 2.0 sockets, audio in / out, a VGA output, Ethernet and a multicard reader. Not bad for USD$399.

Nettop: LG XPION X30
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

Apparently not content to let ASUS have all the fun, LG’s just announced the XPION X30, its first Ion-based nettop. This little fella features an Atom N230 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, and ships with Windows Vista (for the time being, at least). Aside from sporting six (count ‘em!) USB ports, it weighs in at a mere 2.4 lbs, draws just 40 watts of power, and can be VESA mounted to the back of your LCD. But never mind all that — as long is it allows us to stream American Ninja from Netflix with minimal fuss we’re happy. Debuts tomorrow in Korea.

ViewSonic Netbook?
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

Everyone is on the netbook bandwagon nowadays! Even Viewsonic, famous producer of LCD panel and monitors is now busy introducing their line of “mini” notebooks. If you look at the VNB102’s spec sheet, you’ll find that it comes with an Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard disk. Should that still satisfy your humble needs, it’ll cost you USD$349 with a 3-cell battery or USD$399 for the 6-cell edition.

Toshiba’s dynadock wireless U: it’s a universal docking station, but wireless
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized
Wireless docking stations have been around for years now, but the main issue has been bandwidth. Sure, it’s easy to send a wireless mouse signal through the air, but try shoving 720p video, four USB signals and a little bit of arrogance though those highly-spaced particles. Toshiba’s new dynadockwireless U USB docking station does a commendable job of doing the best it can with what it has, tapping into wireless USB technology in order to nix the need for your laptop to actually be seated into your docking station. The device can be setup to auto-connect when your machine is in range, and a one-touch undock button carefully shuts down all of your peripherals as you exit. There’s six USB 2.0 sockets (included two of the Sleep-and-Charge variety), integrated 7.1 audio and support for a VGA / DVI monitor with resolutions as high as 1,680 x 1,050. Nah, that’s not quite 1080p, but we’ll take it for now. The USD$299.99 asking price, however, is a bit harder to swallow.

Lenovo’s Atom-based All-in-one
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

Clearly there’s something special waiting for some product manager who gets all of his / her new kit out the door before the fiscal Q4 ends, as Lenovo has been on a serious tear of late. Hot on the heels of its ThinkPad X200, T400s touch and IdeaPad S12 comes this, another all-in-one desktop that should suit the web surfers and email checkers of the world just fine. Starting at $399 (or $50 less than the similar IdeaCentre C300), this rig is equipped with an 18.5-inch LCD, a two-inch thick chassis, Intel’s Core 230 or Core 330 CPU, a DVD burner, four USB sockets, GMA950 integrated graphics, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB (5400RPM) hard drive and Windows XP running the show. Something tells us these will be flying off the shelves come Christmastime.

VIA’s NetNote is a Netbook afterall
by Keifu on Sep.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

The world needs more tiny notebooks able to fling out high-definition video without flinching. However, the world doesn’t need more arbitrarily named categories of devices. So, it’s with mixed feelings that we bring news of the finalization of the SurfBoard platform from VIA, pledging to bring 1080p playback to the netbook category — or rather to the NetNote category, which is what VIA would like us to call it. We won’t, but we will be happy to see the VX855 media processor start showing up in little laptops soon, as its support for H.264, MPEG-2/4, VC-1, and WMV9 sounds quite a bit more inclusive than we’ve found NVIDIA’s ION to be. We’re not particularly fond of the burnt umber hue applied to the initial recipient above (we liked the looks of the clear prototype much better), but if it means watching high def content in coach class without breaking our backs, killing our batteries, or melting our CPUs, we’d rock it. It certainly would go with the fall fashions. Full press release is below.

ASUS Eee PC T101H 10-inch touchscreen netbook
by Keifu on Jul.11, 2009, under Uncategorized
ASUS have quietly announced the official specifications for their larger Eee PC tablet, the convertible T101H. Like its 8.9-inch T91 sibling, the T101H has an Intel Atom Z520 1.33GHz processor, 16GB SSD (paired with an included 16GB SD card) and a resistive touchscreen; however, in the case of the T101H that LED-backlit panel is 10.1-inches.
The panel runs at 1024 x 600 resolution, while RAM is 1GB (2GB maximum) and the battery is a Li-polymer pack apparently good for up to 5.4hrs. Wireless options include WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth and a 3G module, together with GPS and digital TV, though it’s unclear whether those final three are standard on a single T101H model, or will be spread out among several versions as with the T91.
There’s also a 0.3-megapixel webcam, stereo speakers and a digital array microphone, and the whole thing weighs 1.5kg. ASUS UK have apparently confirmed that the Eee PC T101H is expected to launch by the end of August or early in September 2009, though given they’re also suggesting that it will run Windows 7 (which isn’t released until October 22nd) we’re not quite sure whether that’s accurate. It’s possible a free upgrade to the new OS may be in the works. No word on pricing as yet.

MSI U115 and U110 Eco netbooks
by Keifu on Mar.16, 2009, under Uncategorized

The U110 Eco and the U115 look exactly like the U100 that I have been using for the past 4 months. So nothing to report in the design department. But what is interesting is under the hood. Firstly, the U115 boasts a Hybrid storage system that is part traditional hard drive and part solid state which supposedly boost performance and improve battery life.
The U110 Eco on the hand, instead of the expected Atom N280 or the NVIDIA Ion platform, comes with a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 to achieve nine hours of battery life. No idea on what the performance will be like but with a dedicated graphics card, I am hoping to see more gaming on netbooks.
UPDATE: so apparently the newly announced U110 Eco will not come with an dedicated graphics chip now. Oh well we can wish can’t we?
IT Show 2009: Lenovo Booth
by Keifu on Mar.12, 2009, under Uncategorized
Lenovo is selling the S10 netbook at just S$649. You will also be entitled to purchase Microsoft Office home and student edition at a very attractive price of just S$99! What’s really unique with the Office offer is Lenovo’s addition of an alternative mode of installation via USB stick. I am sure netbook users will welcome this.
